CHAPTER EIGHT

An Independent Expert

Lizzie wedged her way through the crowd at Denny’s and climbed up onto the stool next to Kate. As was usual for a Saturday night, the place was heaving, and Lizzie was not surprised at the admiring circle of young men that hovered around Kate, anxious for any crumbs of her attention. The circle had opened up to allow Lizzie through, as though she was famous just by association with the tall blond goddess.

Kate gave a sort of gentle wave of her hand, which served to indicate to her fans that she was no longer available, and the guys reluctantly drifted away. Archie appeared unsummoned with two glasses of cold white wine.

“From some admirer on the other side of the bar,” he said casually as he placed a glass in front of each of them.

“Well, thank him for both of us,” Kate replied distractedly. Some guy on the other side of the bar was about to have his aspirations shattered, but Kate’s focus was on her friend.

“And so?” she asked with wide eyes.

“Yeah. I cooked him dinner last night. It was really nice.” Lizzie was making an effort to sound off-hand.

“Nice? Nice? I want details, Kate, and I want all of them. I don’t want the filtered down, low-fat version of what took place.”

Lizzie couldn’t help but smile.

“I made us a roast chicken, and we shared a couple of glasses of wine. Well, a couple of bottles, actually, but nothing untoward took place. I’m sorry if that is too low-fat for you.”

Kate gave an exasperated sigh.

“Well, at least tell me you don’t still think he is too old to be sexy.”

“Okay, he is pretty hot. I have to admit that. But the point is he is way too old for me.”

“Are you crazy? Hot trumps old any day of the week. In fact, if a man is hot, then age doesn’t even come into the equation, and Ashton McLeod is hot.”

Lizzie took a sip from her wine. She was starting to agree with her friend, but she wasn’t going to be so generous as to admit it.

“Did he come onto you or make a move?”

“Well, I’m not sure, really.” Lizzie made a bit of a face as she said this.

“You don’t know? You don’t know? What is this? Kindergarten?”

“Well, he asked me if I would model so that he could paint me. I wasn’t sure if it was flirting or he really just wants to paint me?”

It took a few moments for those words to sink in, but finally, Kate spoke again.

“Oh, my fuck. The nude over the fireplace. He painted her, and now he wants to paint you.”

“Yeah, something like that.”

“And you don’t think he was making a move on you?” Kate sounded more incredulous with every second that this conversation took place.

“He’s an artist. He probably just wants someone who will model for him, and I happen to be convenient.”

“Are you insane? Did you have some sort of head trauma that you aren’t telling me about? This man has a giant canvas of a naked woman sprawled across his couch.
